Missouri was first settled by the French who settled the Mississippi River valley. What occurred at the time is recorded largely by priests. The tribes of the Missouri River were a mystery to them so what we know of them is limited. Yet from the few pages we have of those first encounters, an amazing story emerges regarding an Indian "princess." She had no name, so "Kassakumeh" is fictional in that respect. But her life in this novel follows rather closely the historical narrative.

"The Hunt" is my first presentation of "Tears of Kassakumeh, coming from the first chapter of the novel.
